An Annual Home Insurance Checkup: 7 Details to Review

A useful annual review starts with what changed—not just what the renewal costs. Gather a few records, note your questions, and ask your agent or insurer to explain the policy in plain language.
1. Confirm the home details
Check the address, square footage, construction details, and special features shown in your records. Tell your agent about additions, renovations, or other changes that may affect the cost to rebuild.
2. Discuss rebuilding cost
The cost to rebuild a home is different from its sale price or mortgage balance. Ask how your dwelling estimate was prepared and whether the current limit reflects the home as it stands today.
3. Refresh your home inventory
Take room-by-room photos or video, note important items, and keep receipts or model numbers where available. Store a copy somewhere secure that you can access if the home is unavailable.
4. Understand the deductible
Know the amount you would need to pay for a covered loss. Ask whether different causes of loss have different deductibles, and choose an amount you could realistically manage.
5. Ask about limits and exclusions
Read the policy rather than assuming every loss is covered. Ask about limits for valuables, any coverage you do not understand, and whether separate protection may be appropriate for your circumstances.
6. Record your questions in writing
Bring the renewal documents, a list of home changes, and your inventory updates to the conversation. Keep a written record of the questions you asked and the answers you received.
7. Make the next step specific
Before ending the review, confirm what needs follow-up, who will handle it, and whether any requested change has actually taken effect. A conversation or request alone does not change your policy.
